Dog Bone, Universal and Hinged Expansion Joints for Power Plant in Algeria

Dog Bone, Universal and Hinged Expansion Joints for Power Plant in Algeria

MACOGA is manufacturing a complete package of 30 large expansion joints for a combined-cycle power plant in Algeria.

The project is a major power generation development designed to strengthen Algeria’s electricity production capacity and support the country’s growing energy requirements. Hyundai Engineering & Construction is responsible for the EPC execution of the project.

MACOGA’s scope includes the design, manufacture and testing of:

  • 14 lateral expansion joints with tie rods, DN 2500 and 5000 mm in overall length.
  • 14 hinged expansion joints, DN 2500 and 1100 mm in overall length.
  • 2 EPDM Dog Bone expansion joints DN 5300.

One of the most significant elements of the supply is the large DN 5300 Dog Bone expansion joint installed in the connection between the steam turbine exhaust and the air-cooled condenser.

This component provides the flexibility required to accommodate relative movements and vibrations between two critical parts of the power generation system while maintaining a reliable connection under demanding operating conditions.

The lateral expansion joints incorporate double multi-ply bellows have been designed to accommodate lateral movements of up to 150 mm while operating under both positive pressure and full-vacuum conditions.

The hinged units are also equipped with multi-ply stainless steel bellows and are designed to accommodate angular movements of ±1.5 degrees.

This project highlights MACOGA’s capability to design and manufacture large, heavy-duty expansion joints for demanding air-cooled condenser and power generation applications worldwide.
