Expansion Joints for a Midrex® Direct Reduction Plant in Germany
We have successfully completed the design and manufacture of a complete set of metallic expansion joints for a Midrex® Direct Reduction (DRI) plant located in Germany.
The project included several specially engineered expansion joints integrated into the Product Cooler inlet system, designed to operate under the demanding thermal conditions of a direct reduction iron (DRI) process. The assemblies were manufactured in accordance with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU) and designed following the EJMA standard.
The Midrex® technology is the world's leading process for producing Direct Reduced Iron (DRI), also known as sponge iron, from iron ore using natural gas or hydrogen instead of coal. This significantly reduces CO₂ emissions compared with conventional blast furnace ironmaking and plays a key role in the transition toward greener steel production.
The equipment supplied includes several metallic expansion joints with the following main characteristics:
- Type: Single metallic bellows expansion joints integrated into insulated double-wall piping.
- Orientation: Vertical installation.
- Nominal size: DN900.
- Design code: EJMA.
- PED certified (Module H).
- Extensive NDE, including Radiographic Testing (RT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Pneumatic Pressure Testing and PMI on stainless steel components.
