High-Tech Expansion Joints for the APT1 Ammonia Plant in Topolobampo, Mexico

MACOGA has successfully designed, manufactured and supplied a comprehensive package of high-tech metallic expansion joints for the APT1 Ammonia Plant in Topolobampo, Mexico. The plant will mainly supply ammonia for fertilizer production, supporting Mexican agriculture and reducing dependence on imported ammonia and nitrogen-based fertilizers.

The supply includes Angular Gimbal Expansion Joints, a 48-inch Universal Elbow Pressure-Balanced Expansion Joint and a 52-inch Tied Lateral Expansion Joint. Ranging from 6 to 52 inches, the units feature testable two-ply stainless-steel bellows, internal flow sleeves, external protective covers and robust structural components.

Expansion joints in ammonia plants must safely absorb thermal movement, piping misalignment and mechanical loads while maintaining pressure integrity under hazardous process conditions. Reliability, leak tightness, fatigue resistance and load control are essential for protecting the piping system and ensuring continuous operation.

The quality programme included 100% radiographic examination of the bellows plies, liquid penetrant, ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing, positive material identification, hydraulic pressure, pneumatic leak and vacuum testing, and dimensional control.
