Specific Applications

Expansion Joints as per ASME Code Inspection and
ASME Certification Mark

The ASME U Code Symbol Requirements

The requirements of applying a U Code Symbol to an Expansion Joint encompass the whole process from design to purchasing to production and testing.

Starting right with the design, there are rules to be followed. Parameters such as wall thicknesses, materials, welding details, and extent of non-destructive examination are determined by design conditions such as pressure, temperature, and corrosion allowance, fluid running through the Expansion Joint, and any specific requests from the customer. Based on these conditions a comprehensive set of calculations are prepared. They are reviewed by the ASME Authorized Inspector.

Once the design has been reviewed, the materials can be purchased and must comply with the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. All material must be clearly identified to trace it to the applicable Material Certificate Test Report. The ASME Inspector will check the material and review the Material Certificate Test Reports to ensure their conformity with the Code.

Before production can begin, the Inspector will verify that the weld procedure to be used has been qualified and the welders performing the welding are qualified. This is in accordance with ASME Code Section IX

The next step is to review the unit after fabrication is complete to ensure welding was carried out in accordance to Code requirements and all non-destructive testing results have been executed and are satisfactory. The Authorized Inspector will witness the hydrostatic test performed in accordance with the requirements of Section VIII Division 1.

The final step is the application of the nameplate. This is also witnessed by the Inspector. The nameplate will be marked with relevant design conditions and ASME stamp.

Finally, MACOGA issue the Partial Manufacturer Data Report which is endorsed by the ASME Authorized Inspector.
